Military Arts of the Fante

An equestrian figure in Asafo imagery always elicits the same highly conventionalized phrase. “If the horse is mad [crazy], the rider is not also mad.” This expression places a premium on the wisdom and ability of Asafo leadership and is one of the most frequently depicted motifs in Asafo arts.
