Water jars, incense burners and other vessels intended for public display are often painted with red slip designs prior to firing. These vessels are not given the blackening treatment used on large water jars, braziers and cooking pots. Potter Assitan Ballo paints red slip designs on the upper surfaces of a water jar the morning before an afternoon firing.
