Now and then, however, I yearned for the literal translation that color film and anthropology provides: who would know, for instance, that deep in the heart of Mendeland, in a village called Yambama, the flower petals pasted into the muddied hair of these girls were fuscia and orange? Or that their lips were colored a bright, electric blue? (RB)
