Lucinda, Sierra Leone. Photo by Rebecca Busselle.

The first time I photographed Lucinda she was carrying wood for the evening cook fire—one of the chores my next-door neighbor expected from the many children who lived with her and her four co-wives. In the first frame on the contact sheet, Lucinda looks up from her armload and smiles shyly, perhaps a bit warily. But by the second frame, a few seconds later, a grin mounds her cheeks arid crinkles her eyes: she is a child about to collapse into giggles. (RB)
