Wooden pipe bowls (Catalog No: 90.1/ 4117 and Catalog No: 90.1/ 4646) representing the scientists Herbert Lang and James Chapin were made by a Zande artist. This type of pipe (with a separate stem and bowl), was introduced to the area by Europeans in the early part of the century. The bowl was fastened to a stem made from the mid-rib of a banana leaf.
