Prayers for his or her ori inu (“inner head”) are offered to Orunmila, Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, June 1982. Photo by John Pemberton III.

During the service a priest touches one of the palm nuts to each persons' head. Prayers for his or her ori inu ("inner head") are offered to Orunmila, beseeching that the suppliant who attends to ifa and pursues the sacrificial way of life may realize the destiny he or she chose before entering the world.
